Update: Where have I been?

July 17th, 2009

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Hello everyone.  Apologies for not posting in ages! I have been a busy man for the past few weeks.

Firstly I went on holiday for 2 weeks in Turkey to Hisaronu, if you haven’t been I highly recommend it, it’s quite cheap, very hot and a beautiful place!  I now have a tan to rival David Dickinson!

Secondly I have been very busy trying to build and launch a new website, details will come soon but I am pretty excited about it.  For those of you who know what sites I have I like graphics and teenager based sites.  This is based on a similar principle but for a slightly more mature market.  It is taking up a lot of time but I am quite proud of what I am making so far.

Just before I went away I was contacted by someone about selling another one of my sites.  It is a fairly undeveloped site but with a good name and I originally had big plans for it.  Due to a lack of time I never got round to pursuing it and marketing it properly.  Anyway someone got in touch about buying it and I am closing the deal today for £700 which is pretty good as the site is only a year old.

This is the second site in as many months that I could have sold.  I am beginning to think that buy buying an attractive domain name and putting a simple site up could work well as a flipping opportunity by waiting for buyers as opposed to peddling the sites on digitalpoint or flippa.

Flippa, by the way, is the new website selling service from sitepoint.  Their entire marketplace has been moved to this new site.  It is quite good but, like most sites like this, is full of spam and rubbish.  If you can filter through the rubbish though there are some great websites to buy.  I look on there fairly often to see if I can find a bargain as I am still looking for an established site to buy to add to my portfolio.

Get your Adsense earnings reported in your own currency

June 15th, 2009

I just logged into Adsense to see that I was able to update my adsense reporting to my own currency (GBP). I thought at first I might not like it (the figure would be lower than USD) but after a while I just took the plunge… and… ITS ACE!

Seriously it’s very cool, its so much easier to figure out how much you are actually earning when things are in your own currency. I for one thought I earnt more but I didnt. For example today I had earnt about $16 at the time of my switch. It now reports £10 which isn’t too bad, it just seems… a lot… lower.

Still I am happy about it.
A good thing too is that my adsense checker (I need to release this, sorry about the delay) will automatically pick up your own currency and display your earnings in whatever your preference is set to! Win.

In other news I joined twitter, follow me.

Oh and wordpress 2.8 is out… I shall upgrade shortly.

Do you own a $3,500 site?

June 3rd, 2009

I do apparently.

One of my sites is a graphics site, serving up graphics to the masses of teens who love that kind of stuff.  It works very well and has some clever SEO stuff up its sleeve that I will probably go into on this blog at some point.  It earns pretty well too, it earnt well over $2,500 in the past year and that is taking into account an explosion I had last Christmas due to implementing adsense link units so this year it should do even better.

I received an email from someone last week asking if I would like to sell the site.  Interested in knowing more I responded asking him to make me an offer.  He offered $3,500 blind without even knowing any of the stats.  I presume he guessed at my traffic / income levels by how well I ranked in the SERPs for various difficult terms.

So what did I do?

I said no… but why?

Firstly I believe the site will, over the next year, earn the amount offered, but it also has the chance to earn more.  Plus I will be earning that amount every year unless something goes wrong.

Secondly the site has some very special SEO properties that I can leverage to help new sites I make.  Note I have not done this for my adsense challenge as I thought it would be cheating.

The best thing about it? Exactly 1 year ago someone offered to by the site off me for $400 and I almost said yes! It just goes to show how much difference 1 year can make to a site’s value and income.

Has anyone here sold a site (or had an offer on their site) for a fair bit of cash?

Moving servers – How to do it right

June 2nd, 2009

A few of you may have noticed I have not posted for quite some time. There are a few reasons for this. First up I have been uber busy working on my niche site and secondly I was told my old hosting provider was going to shut down, in 2 weeks!! So I had to quickly find alternative hosting.

I proceeded to frantically search the web for a cost efficient and quality server to house all my sites and I finally found one that looked good.  I will probably write a full review of them later, but essentially what I was faced with now was the massive task of moving a massive array of sites and the possibility of losing money and rankings if any of them went down.

As this was the first time I had done this I made a few mistakes, but in hind sight they would be pretty easy to correct in the future.

So here is a quick checklist of things you should do before switching hosts, preferably in this order

  1. Copy all the data to the new server
I did this via a cPanel / WHM transfer and my new host kindly took care of it for me
  2. Verify your data
I didn’t do this properly and it lead to problems.  Check that not only has each account transfered, but the files are all there, and your databases are all there.  Sometimes one but not the other will transfer.  Sometimes you may have to manually copy data across.
  3. Change the nameservers of your domains
I was lucky in that I had setup custom nameservers at my old host so all I had to do was register those nameservers at my new hosting and ALL my sites moved over seamlessly – cool huh?! I’d suggest anyone do this NOW before you feel the burn of moving 20+ sites one by one.

Because I didn’t do these steps thoroughly (I said they were easy didn’t I?) I ended up in a world of pain and some of my sites went down for a number of days.

Thankfully though, all my sites are now working and faster than ever!

So it’s good to be back, its a MASSIVE weight off my shoulders, and I hope to make up for lost time very soon!

Quick Update

May 7th, 2009

Hey everyone. First up apologies for the lack of updates recently. I have been mega busy working, so blogging has taken a back seat. A nice saying I once heard was that “the people who make money don’t blog; because they are too busy making money” and I believe that to be mostly true, with a few exceptions of course.

I have my Adsense notifier app almost complete and it’s looking pretty darn good! I’m just adding some final touches to it. It will hopefully be complete within a week.

I now also have my adsense challenge site indexed in google with a good few articles, I will be looking to write some more this weekend.

My most exciting news related to a new SEO technique I have implemented. It’s a very special PHP class the essentially modified your site on the fly to rank your site better. I’ll post results in a few weeks.

Stay posted for a proper post soon!

End of week round up

May 1st, 2009

It has been a while since I posted, this has been because I’ve been frantically working on a few projects of mine.  I heard this saying once, the people who actually make money don’t tell anyone, namely because they are too busy making money! Obviously the’re is a few exceptions to this, such as John Chow and Darren Rowse, who makes a lot of their money from being public figures.

So here is a quick round up of what is going on at the moment…

Adsense Challenge
I have my domain bought, my design up, and I have written 4 articles.  I have also been looking into the link building techniques I will use to promote the site.  I’ll post the techniques I used when I’ve finished writing the articles.

Adsblacklist – Does it work?
I saw an instant increase in earnings after doing this, and have had very good earnings since, I’ll hold off posting real data until the end of the trial week is up, but it seems to work pretty well!

Adsense Notifier
My adsense notifier program is written, I just have to put a nice interface on it, tie up some loose ends and add some polish; it should be ready soon.  I have enlisted the help of a friend of mine to do the interface as [a] im too busy with web stuff to do it [b] his recent stuff has been good!

How is everyone else getting on with their projects?

My aims – Update

April 24th, 2009

Two weeks ago I wrote about my aims for this blog and thought I would write a little post letting everyone know where I am with them.

My first aim was getting 100 RSS subscribers and those of you with working eyes may have already noticed I am up to 9 according to the FeedBurner image on the right.

My second aim is to have 100 comments.  I currently have 14 which is great, and I also received my first spam comment the other day which is interesting as it contained no useful link or anchor text so I conclude it must have been a test to see if my blog accepted spam, after which they would drop real links.  Quite clever if you think about it as it means their money sites won’t be exposed unless they can actually drop the link!

My last aim was to create an Adsense notifier program, which is complete and works, however I am attempting to make it a bit more special, so probably won’t release for a while.  I’ll keep everyone updated on that.

I currently don’t disclose my earnings, and won’t until the adsense challenge kicks off properly.  I have, however, noticed my eCPM drop over all my sites significantly this month, which is annoying, I hope that this is just a small fluctuation and things will return in a few weeks.  Either way its not off putting, it just means I have to work more which, as I mentioned in my last post, is what I believe to be the secret to making money online. Giving up is not an option!

My aims for this blog

April 8th, 2009

I haven’t set out to make money off this blog, or to become an Internet celebrity, but I do a few things I want to do, so I figure if I list them here, we can all see if I did, or didn’t, achieve them in a few months time.

Given that I am a world class procrastinator there is every chance none of these goals will be met, but maybe, just maybe, I might pull my finger out and do them!

So here is my list, the target date will be 3 months from now which is the beginning of July [and yes unfortunately I had to whip out my calendar to figure that out!]

Get 100 RSS Subscribers

It sounds obvious but why write a blog if no one reads it? So I have set myself what I would consider to be a fairly modest target of getting 100 subscribers.

Get 100 comments

I can’t figure out if this will be harder, or easier than the first one.  Comments usually occur on established blogs where the reader has some sort of relationship with the author or content.  As this is a new blog I am going to have to rely on compelling content where I can; you can let me know if I actually achieve this.

Write an adsense checker tool

I saw that Paul had done something similar on his site, I downloaded it and really liked it, but being an alleged C# Professional I reckon I could give it a good go.  Whilst I am re-inventing the wheel a bit here it is (a) something I want to do and (b) might help some of you folk out there, so its all good baby!

So there you go, three relatively easy targets that loads of people can easily do.  So, you ask yourself, why set them at all if you are some kind of Internet Marketing Guru?  Well firstly I am not, and secondly I don’t blog so this is all new to me.  But more importantly setting yourself targets is the way to achieve anything in this life.  The only way I got through college and university was by setting targets for myself.  I do it every day at work, and if you treat your internet marketing like a business, you should set yourself targets in that… no matter how big or small!

Why start blogging now?

April 8th, 2009

I have always wanted to start a blog, but never had the energy or reason to do it in the past.  Now though I find myself increasingly wanting to make comments on other blogs, forums or share what I think I know about the Internet world and figure this might be a decent place to start.

I recently started reading another blog by a chap called Paul, I admit I only subscribed to his email feed to get access to another part of his site but after reading a few of his posts I quite liked the blog even though I was not interested in all the content.  Anyway, I made a few comments and half way through writing one I thought to myself that it would make a great blog post… I never did anything about it and shelved my thoughts for another day.

Then last week something terrible happened, it shook me up and almost made me quit “internet marketing” for good… I’ll cover this in another blog post but suffice to say I felt I should share my experience so here I am.  Hopefully my next few posts will have some actual real interesting content in… The first two seem to have been allll about me :)

When is a blog not a blog

April 7th, 2009

Hello all.

This is the first post of my new, and technically first, blog.  First post’s always seem a little weird for me, mostly because when you start a blog you have no one reading it, so for whose benefit is it? And secondly you have not yet established a natural writing flow so its usually a bit… disjointed.

Anyway… who am I and what do I do?

I am Chris, a Software Engineer by day, Web Developer by night.  At work I write C# apps for Windows and PDAs, I’m learning WPF and MVVM as we speak and thoroughly enjoying it.  Web wise I own a couple of graphics sites and also do the odd spot of web design for people.  I enjoy SEO but more so the theory of it, rather than actually doing it.

Right well thats me, short and simple, on to some real posts?!
